NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT 
(NICU)

Premature infants are at greatest risk for low birth weight, temperature instability, respiratory distress, infection, and jaundice. GLA’s NICU provides the necessary skilled nursing care and access to essential equipment such as warming incubators, IV fluids, IV antibiotics, CPAP machines, and oxygen; all of which can save an infant’s life and allow them to begin to thrive outside of the womb. 90% of our referrals are from hospitals in Port Au Prince that struggle to serve a population of 3 million. These hospitals are not staffed or equipped to care for premature infants and they rely on NICU facilities like the one at GLA to assist them in challenging circumstances. GLA is blessed with 24-hour trained nursing staff and a skilled consulting pediatrician. We also provide a place for the infant’s mother to stay (if she is able to) fostering much needed opportunities for bonding, feeding, and instructions on how to properly care for her infant. Our goal is for each premature baby to not only survive but to also thrive under the loving care of their nurse, ultimately being able to return home with their biological families once stable.
